Axel "Döderhultarn" Petersson (1868-1925) was a Swedish woodcarver and artist. Born in the parish of Döderhult in the Kalmar region of Sweden, he was self-taught. His major breakthrough came with an exhibition that was organised by Hans Zetterström - editor of the weekly comical magazine, Söndags-Nisse - at an art dealer in Stockholm in 1909. Here, an earlier version of the sculpture group, "Beväringsmönstringen [The Conscription]", was exhibited. It was eventually acquired by the Gothenburg Art Museum for 150 Swedish Kroner - no discount. Another version of the sculpture, dating back to the period 1900- 1909, is included in this exhibition.
