Alex Hubbard paintings and videos take great fun in creating problems that were not there to begin with. Starting from zero is too difficult. Starting by solving a problem is easier. Hence, you got to start with making the problem; building up a dense matrix at the foundation of his paintings that he may now work against, or simply employing inherently resistant materials such as resin, urethane and fibreglass, which leaves the painting process difficult to control. Similarly in his video works, Hubbard would create sizable sets where an impossible chain of events would take place, or layer the screen with separate actions and movements now resulting in an overflow of information and imagery, and restless and endlessly altering pictorial space.
